Karen, Looks like I am not the only one working this summer. I have 2 children on Diastat for the district, one in my building, Middle School and one at the Elem. school. We have researched Diastat on the web and trained the special ed. department on its use and time to use it. The physician has prescribed use only with a seizure lasting 2 minutes or more. It is on that child's IHP and IEP plan and Parents are aware to always keep us aware of changing orders. I hope this helps. I agree it is very scary to have to be out of the building and hope everyone connected to that child has the right instincts to use it correctly. Just another reminder of the awesome responsibility of a school nurse and the pressure to make sure all goes well.
Sincerely,
Pauline Wylie, RN

AR school nurses,
Hope some of you are listening this summer!
I'm wondering if your district staffs RNs differently at schools that
have students with Diastat orders? My observation is that MOST of the
students with this order have never had a seizure lasting more than a
few seconds or less than a minute, and probably a history of only a
single seizure occurrence. Has anyone researched the protocols for this
order? I'm wondering if it is over prescribed? I don't want a student
who actually needs it to be without it at school, but in most cases it
seems like a huge staffing and security nightmare to me!
Thanks, I'd like to hear your thoughts.
