[School-nurse] Staffing Diastat

Karen,

In our district, when we have a student that has an order for Diastat they will attend the school that has an RN assigned there every day. We don't get into the business of trying to figure out which students actually need the med and which were over prescribed. The parents do not always like this solution, but it is the only way we have for a student to have this med at school. Our other schools have RN's assigned, but they would not be there everyday because the nurses have multiple schools.

I know this is not a perfect solution, but so far it has worked in our district. I will tell you that we have not had to use the diastat in many instances. Most of the time the seizure is self-limiting and the med is not required. Our district is also very fortunate in that we have two hospitals in case of an emergency. I know that is not the case with most of Arkansas' schools.

AR school nurses,

Hope some of you are listening this summer!

I'm wondering if your district staffs RNs differently at schools that
have students with Diastat orders? My observation is that MOST of the
students with this order have never had a seizure lasting more than a
few seconds or less than a minute, and probably a history of only a
single seizure occurrence. Has anyone researched the protocols for this
order? I'm wondering if it is over prescribed? I don't want a student
who actually needs it to be without it at school, but in most cases it
seems like a huge staffing and security nightmare to me!

Thanks, I'd like to hear your thoughts.
