I think the school districts do not know what to call us!!! All of our school nurses (RN and LPN)are classified and not certified personal. Only the teachers are considered certified even though are nurses have degrees even some with master degrees.

Why are LPN's not worthy of being certified rather that classified? We
do the EXACT same things as the RN'S on a daily basis in the School
Nurse setting. We went to school to earn a degree, and you have a
nursing degree to be a school nurse. So...........why should RN's be
the only ones that are considered "certified"? I have been at my school
district for 17 years and we only got an RN in the district 2 years ago
and she is part-time.

Good point Jannette. I am an LPTN and have a license to practice nursing ( since 1979), therefore I should be under a different classification than non-certified employees. The schools must have a nurse just like they must have teachers, regardless of years the nurse went to nursing school.

Sherri-
In response to the email regarding school nurses/classified personnel,
this sounds like a great idea to me. We need to push for a diff.
"sub-group listing" rather than just being lumped in with
other classified personnel, such as janitors, secretaries & para-pro's,
since we do have a license & a degree.
What can I do to help?

I am currently the Wellness committee chairmen, but I don't plan to do
it again next year. I am also the Safe & Drug Free Schools chair, and
that is a very busy committee with grant money attached to it to manage.
The wellness committee could be a full time job! If you had the time to
do all the components that need to be done, that group could make a real
difference. I have also decided that there needs to be money allocated
for that committee to use, otherwise some of the activities just do not
get funded.

Hello,
I am a member of our Classified Personnel Policy Committee at Benton
Schools. I have brought before the committee a proposal of changing the
RN's classification to Classified Medical Professional. Have any of
your districts done this or are any of you grouped in the certified
classification?
Thank you,

Both LPN's & RN's should be included in the "classified medical
Personnel". As long as u are a nurse it shouldn't matter.

Why should just rn's be considered for classified personnel, as an LPN I
feel I earned my degree just like rn's and have to do the same work as
rn's

In past years I have been Chairman of the Wellness committee because a
former superintendent volunteered me. This year I e mailed our present
super and told him I would be stepping down from that position.
I have yet to hear a response and this was made to him at the
beginning of the school year.

There are several issues addressed here.
#1. The law differentiates between LPN, LPTN, RN, and APN. That is the
first determining factor.
#2. Educational level: LPN degree, Associate Degree, Diploma,
Baccalaureate degree, Master's degree, doctoral degree.

I would suggest that ALL download a copy of the School Nurse Guidelines
(from this web site) and read it closely. I would focus on the pages
dedicated to the law and defining the practice of the different levels
of nursing, the delegation model and the supervision aspect. Because
honestly, legally LPNs do NOT do everything an RN does.

I do not, at any time, want ANYONE to think that I believe that one
nurse is more or less worthy than another. We all need each other. But
this is not the time to tear each other down.

As far as compensation for what you do. There are classifications of
personnel, such as certified, classified and professional. Now if you
want to get really technical, it is no longer called certification, but
now is teacher licensure! SO, if you want to be frank, there could be a
teacher's salary schedule, classified salary schedule and a Professional
salary schedule. This professional would be OT, PT, Speech, Nursing,
Counselors, etc. Because to be perfectly frank, to put nursing on a
teacher's salary schedule would only be able to include BSN nurses.
Because the minimal educational preparation for a teacher is a BS
degree. SOOOOOOO, if there was a professional salary schedule, pay could
be related to educational level and years of experience, JUST like the
teacher's salary schedule is. Then decide if the years of experience
would be within nursing, speciality of school nursing and/or district.
This is JUST MY OPINION.

Our districts 3 RN's and 1 LPN are all listed as classified. I'm the

are all listed as classified!-----Original Message-----

I would check with your RN's to make sure they are certified. I am an
RN and I am classified and when we vote for our PPC members I am on the
ballot with the janitors and para-pro's, I do not have a different
classification nor am considered certified.

I am an LPTN and have a license to practice nursing
( since 1979), therefore I should be under a different classification
than non-certified employees. The schools must have a nurse just like
they must have teachers, regardless of years the nurse went to nursing
school.

Sherri-
In response to the email regarding school nurses/classified personnel,
this sounds like a great idea to me.

Both LPN's & RN's should be included in the "classified medical
Personnel". As long as u are a nurse it shouldn't matter.

In past years I have been Chairman of the Wellness committee because a
former superintendent volunteered me. This year I e mailed our present
super and told him I would be stepping down from that position.
I have yet to hear a response and this was made to him at the
beginning of the school year.

Certified or classified we all working in the same field. Certified
salary schedules are for those with a four year degree or greater. You
have other employees with two year degrees (such as book keepers, para
professionals, Associate RN's) or vocational licenses like myself on
classified schedules. We need to push for a minimum pay scale from the
state. Teachers in the state have a minimum salary as mandated by the
State Board of Education. Some districts pay above and some stay at
the state minimum.. We need a minimum salary for all LPN's, 2 year RN's
and BSN's. Other than salaries being classified or certified should not
matter.
